Global Ocean Trawler Challenge

Our Eco-Warriors have been busy looking at new challenges for us to do and their ideas are incredible!! We have came across the 'Global Ocean Trawler Challenge".

Our Eco-Warriors are getting the whole school excited about taking part in the Global Ocean Trawler Challenge, thanks to the British Ironworks.

As a school, we will aim to fill their trawler net with the most crisp and confectionery packets so they can be in with a chance to host ‘Coral’ the clownfish!

We are ready for the challenge!

Eco-Warriors Information

Autumn 1

Eco-Warriors!

Over the next couple of weeks during our Forest School sessions, we will be discussing how we can be a part of the ECO Schools. We will be asking the children if they would like to be a part of our ECO Warriors club! The club will run every Monday lunch time between 12.30 and 1pm.

As a school, we will connect our activities to three or more of the Ten Eco-Schools Topics. These topics break large, global issues like climate change into more manageable and directed themes that prompt young people to consider environmental changes that they can make in their school and everyday lives.

Children will be given an application form if they request one. We are hoping that we would like to accommodate everyone that applies, however, we will only be able to accept 20 children.

Autumn 2

 Eco-Warriors!

This term, our Eco Committee, would really like to help the homeless as we enter the colder months.

Our aim is to collect as many empty crisp packets and recycle them into survival blankets.

Just one survival blanket needs 52 crisp packets!

We would be very grateful with your help for this project. Please pass all donations to Mrs Mason and Mrs Hurst.

Crisp Blanket Survival Blankets

At the start of the new school year children applied for the schools Eco-Warrior team.

During our first session, we looked at ways that we could become more economical. One of the ideas that the children came across was that crisp packets are not recyclable and we looked at different ways that we could change this.

We researched many different ideas, and we came across the idea to create crisp packet survival blankets for the homeless. As an eco-warrior they did a full presentation to the whole school to raise awareness of this and encouraged all of the children and staff in school to bring in their empty crisp packets. The whole school helped collect thousands of packets.

Once these were collected as a community, the eco-warriors then started to prepare them ready to be made into survival blankets for the homeless. Once these were made we got in touch with ‘We shall over come charity’ to drop of the blankets which we had made. The children were  filmed for ITV Granada news for their amazing efforts as well as being in the local paper.

We are really luck as a school to have Mrs. Hayes as a big support of all our ideas to help the community. We will be continuing to grow and look at other ways to look after our world.

Spring

This term, the Wild Warriors have been tasked with coming up with new ideas that may help our local community. We will have a meeting on Monday 3rd March to hear their ideas.

One of the things that we will be doing in addition to the Wild Warriors ideas is taking part in the “Ocean Trawler Challenge”. We will be competing against other schools to see who can fill their net with the crisp and confectionary packaging. If we succeed we get a metal coral clownfish or one of her friends to loan from the British Ironworks centre. This is as a follow up of our crisp blanket challenge.

We are also looking at going for a gold Picture News Impact Award. This is all about how we are making positive changes in our local community as well as the world!

Earth Hour 2025

On Friday 21st March, our Eco-Warriors held an assembly about Earth Hour to the whole school. The official Earth Hour was on Saturday 22nd March. During the assembly we talked about the importance of our carbon footprints and how important it is to try and conserve energy. As an Eco team, we have challenged each class to have a hour of teaching without the use of lights, computers and whiteboards!

We also have asked the children to try and complete an Earth Hour at home!

Please send in any photos of your family spending time together without the use of technology to ecowarrior@ourladys.tameside.sch.uk
